2001 Triple Crown Nominees
Nominee Listing: A - G H - R S - ZA new record was set this year with 439 total nominees, including 53 from Europe which more than doubled that previous record. The previous record for total nominations was 422 which was set in 1986, the first year for common nominations to all three races. The $5 million bonus for any horse who can sweep all three Triple Crown races is again offered this year as the Visa Triple Crown Challenge.
Early nominations were $600 and closed on January 13th. Late nominations are $6000 and will close on March 31st.
Trainers D. Wayne Lukas and Aidan O'Brien tie for most nominees with 21 each but are followed closely by Saeed bin Suroor of Godolphin with 20. Below are some statistics about the nominees and their connections.
